Cyclone Biparjoy: 'IMD issues heavy rain alert in many states today

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) alerted that  'very severe' cyclonic storm Biparjoy is expected to intensify during the next 24 hours and proceed in a north-northeast direction. The meteorological office has issued a warning for the next three days' worth of heavy rain across Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and over Lakshadweep.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur were all placed on yellow alert by Kerala. Meanwhile, it has been suggested that fishermen in Kerala and Karnataka stay inside. 

"Very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy over east-central Arabian Sea around lat 16.0N & long 67.4E at 2330 IST on June 9th. In a tweet, IMD stated that the storm was "likely to intensify further & move north-northeastwards during the next 24hrs."

High waves have been seen at Tithal Beach near Valsad on the Arabian Sea coast in advance of Cyclone Biparjoy. Tithal Beach has been restricted to visitors until June 14 as a precaution.

"We warned the fishermen against going out into the sea, and they have all returned. If necessary, people will be relocated to the seaside village. For them, shelters have been built. Till June 14, Tithal Beach would not be open to visitors, according to Tehsildar TC Patel of Valsad.

It is quite possible that there will be heavy rain in a few scattered locations over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep over the next three days. Over North East India over the next five days, there will likely be mild to moderate amounts of scattered to widespread rainfall, as well as thunderstorms and lightning.

On June 9, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will likely have very heavy rain, followed by Assam and Meghalaya on June 12 and 13. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the next five days, as well as for Manipur and Mizoram between June 10 and 12.

Between June 11 and 13, there could be very heavy rain in a few isolated locations over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Over the Andaman and Nicobar islands from June 9 to 11, as well as in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 9 and 10, there were isolated strong rainstorms.
