Cyclone Fani makes landfall in West Bengal's Kharagpur

Kharagpur: Cyclonic storm Fani, which wreaked havoc in Odisha, has made landfall in West Bengal, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. The cyclone, with wind speed of over 200 kmph, has mostly affected coastal areas in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. According to the Meteorological department, the extremely severe cyclonic storm relatively weakened after entering coastal Odhisha, has been transformed into 'very severe' as it approached West Bengal.

On early Saturday morning, Fani made landfall in West Bengal. As Fani moves towards Bangladesh, it is expected to lash Assam and the northeastern region for two days from Saturday. In the meantime, Overcast conditions will continue all through the day today on Kolkata. Air India has resumed its services from the Kolkata airport, whereas full-fledged operations were resumed at Bhubaneswar Airport in Odisha.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, told media that their first priority was to rescue people living in the vulnerable areas in order to ensure no more casualties. He further said that in the last 24 hours, about 12 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable districts to safer locations. Mayor of Kolkata Firhad Kalim, said that all the disaster management teams were ready to tackle severe cyclonis activity. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi has assured all help to people of Odisha and West Bengal.
