New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Friday a significant development in the weather pattern over the Northwest Bay of Bengal. The previously identified deep depression has now escalated into a cyclonic storm officially named "Midhili." According to the IMD, this storm has been steadily advancing north-northeastwards at a speed of 20 kmph over the past six hours. As of Friday morning, it is positioned approximately 330 km away from the coast.

Anticipated Landfall and Impact on Bangladesh Coast

In an official statement shared via Twitter on X, the IMD announced, "The Deep Depression over NW Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclonic Storm “Midhili” (pronounced as “Midhili”). It is currently centered at 0530 hrs IST of 17th Nov over Northwest BoB, about 190 km east of Paradip (Odisha), 200 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 220 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh)." The IMD predicts that the cyclonic storm is poised to make landfall along the Bangladesh coast, traversing through the Khulna division via Khepupara and Mongla during the night of November 17 and early hours of November 18.

Forecasted Impact on Odisha and Safety Measures

The impending cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to several regions of Odisha, particularly along the coastal areas. A warning has been issued for heavy rainfall in Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur on November 17. Additionally, other areas such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Jajpur might also experience significant rainfall. Wind speeds could reach 45-65 kmph along the Odisha coast.

Precautionary Measures Advised by IMD During Thunderstorms and Lightning

The IMD has issued crucial guidelines for individuals to follow during thunderstorms and lightning occurrences:

Avoid seeking shelter under isolated trees.

Immediately move away from ponds, lakes, and outdoor watery areas.

Seek refuge indoors or in sturdy shelters upon hearing thunder, and remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.

If no shelter is available, adopt the lightning crouch position (a protective posture with head tucked and hands over ears while being as low to the ground as possible).

While traveling, stay inside vehicles like cars, buses, or trains during thunderstorms.

Refrain from using electrical appliances.
Keep a safe distance from fallen power lines.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and urges residents in the potentially affected areas to stay updated on further advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
