New Delhi: The single-dose Russian-origin Sputnik-Light vaccine has been approved for emergency use by the Indian pharma regulator, offering medics with yet another vaccination to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of over five lakh Indians in the last two years.

"In India, the Drugs Controller General has approved single-dose Sputnik Light Covid-19 vaccination emergency use approval. This is the country's ninth Covid-19 vaccination. On Sunday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted, "This will further boost the nation's joint struggle against the pandemic."

The DCGI granted Dr Reddy's Laboratory, an Indian pharmaceutical company, permission to conduct a bridging trial of the Sputnik Light vaccine in September to see if the single-dose Russian Covid-19 vaccine might be released in India in the future.
