New Delhi, India: The Central Government announced on Saturday that the States and Union Territories still had approximately 11.02 crore COVID-19 vaccination doses that have not been used.
"More than 166.17 crore (1,66,17,16,335) vaccine doses have been delivered to States/UTs so far through Govt. of India (free of cost channel) and direct state procurement category," according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Ministry stated that "more than 11.02 Cr (11,02,64,356) balance and unutilized COVID Vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered."
The immunisation campaign has been boosted by the availability of more vaccinations, improved visibility of vaccine availability for States and UTs to enable better planning, and a more efficient vaccine supply chain. The Centre has been assisting States and UTs by providing them with free COVID vaccines.
The government would acquire and supply to States and UTs 75 percent of the vaccinations -free of charge, manufactured by vaccine makers in the country in the new phase of the COVID-19 vaccination push.
On January 16, 2021, the countrywide COVID-19 vaccination programme began. The new phase of COVID-19 vaccination universalization began on June 21, 2021.
