New Delhi: Today is the death anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh. He died on 23 June 1953 under mysterious circumstances. The BJP celebrates this day as 'Sacrifice Day'. Even after ideological differences, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru appointed Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee as a minister in his interim government. However, by accusing Nehru of appeasement, he resigned from the post of the minister and founded the Jan Sangh Party.

Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born on 6 July 1901 in Kolkata. He passed the barrister examination in 1927 after graduating from Calcutta University. In the provincial elections held in 1937 under the Government of India Act 1935, no party had a majority in Bengal. It was from this election that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stepped into politics, but could not win the election. However, in the year 1944, Dr Mukherjee made his own identity by becoming the President of the Hindu Mahasabha. Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of India, had many differences with Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. After the independence of the country, when Nehru became the Prime Minister of the country in 1947, Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel themselves recommended Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to be included in the then cabinet. Pandit Nehru included Dr Mukherjee in the cabinet and gave him the responsibility of Minister of Industry and Supply.

These differences increased when an agreement was reached between Nehru and the then Pakistan PM Liaquat Ali. After its agreement, Mukherjee resigned from the cabinet on 6 April 1950. Mukherjee formed the Rashtriya Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951, in consultation with Guru Golwalkar, the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In fact, Mukherjee was a staunch opponent of Article 370 imposed by Nehru in Kashmir, stating that two legislations, two marks and two constitutions would not run in a country. Opposing this, he was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir, where he died in police custody and the cause of death was said to be a heart attack.
