New Delhi: To keep an eye on burning in the open and other actions that reasoned air pollution, the Delhi government has declared the deployment of home guard volunteers as environment marshals.

By now, Fourteen Home Guards have been deployed in seven wards of three municipal corporations, monitoring high polluting areas together with Anand Vihar, I.P. Extension, Jhilmil, Daryaganj, Okhla, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar-Samaypur Badli and Shahbad Daulatpur-Pooth Khurd.

"In the coming days, the Department of Environment plans to increase the number of marshals to 100 who will be deployed in 50 wards of MCD," the government said in a statement.

In the row of reducing pollution in Delhi, the marshals of the government will provide information of incidents of open burning of leaves, garbage or plastic or open dumping of construction waste and spillage of solid waste at landfill sites.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) asked the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), under the Delhi government, to monitor the open burning and to initiate effective measures to manage dust pollution caused due to reckless construction activities in November.

In a while, the Central Pollution Control Board also came up with rules except for sale of construction materials at the roadside and notifying effective majors like for dumping the construction waste by either wrappering  it or sprinkling water to manage dust.

As per the reports of the Delhi government officials, the marshals will report to supervisory officers from DPCC on a daily basis and will be paid  on monthly basis which carry the amount of Rs 5,000 for transportation and Rs 1,500 for mobile phone usage.
