New Delhi: In a bid to encourage large scale adoption of electric vehicles in Delhi to curb air pollution in the country's capital, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government plans to provide electric two-wheelers to its employees on easy monthly instalments (EMIs).

Officials said the government had on Thursday announced a major scheme to encourage e-cycles, with the first 10,000 electric bicycle buyers getting a purchase incentive of 25 per cent (up to Rs 10,000), while the first 1,000 will be given an additional purchase incentive of Rs 2,000. According to official estimates, the Delhi government has over two lakh employees. An official, on the condition of anonymity, said the Kejriwal government is now considering a contract with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited, to provide electric two-wheelers to its employees.

The official said that since two-wheelers (scooters and bikes) contribute to the registration of two-thirds of new vehicles in Delhi, it is very important that this segment is converted into an electric model to help significantly reduce air pollution in the capital.
