NEW DELHI: A contract killer, sought in connection with a murder case from May, was apprehended by the Special Cell of Delhi Police following a fierce gunfight, an official reported on Thursday.

The individual in custody, identified as Kamil, also known as Nahid (30), hails from Meerut district and has been linked to no less than 12 criminal incidents, including murder, robbery, dacoity, assault, criminal intimidation, and violations of the Arms Act. These cases were registered in both Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Law enforcement officers have confiscated a Zigana pistol (.32 caliber) and three live cartridges from the suspect's possession.

As per the police, they received information regarding Kamil's presence in Rohini, leading to extensive surveillance in the area to track his movements.

"After relentless efforts spanning over a month, Inspector Shiv Kumar received specific inputs on Wednesday that Kamil would be near Mahadev Chowk on Bawana Road. He was expected to be riding a Hero Splendor bike and heading towards Sector 29, Rohini, between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. to meet an associate," stated Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

"Acting swiftly on this intelligence, a team was assembled, and a trap was set near the mentioned location to apprehend the suspect. At approximately 10:15 p.m., the team spotted an individual matching Kamil's description riding a bike, approaching from the direction of Mahadev Chowk. The team members, after identifying themselves, signaled for him to halt. However, Kamil abandoned his bike instead. Sensing the situation, the raiding team surrounded him and demanded his surrender," Dhaliwal explained.

In a dramatic turn of events, Kamil drew his pistol and discharged three rounds towards the police team. "In self-defense, the team responded with two rounds, one of which struck Kamil's right knee," Dhaliwal added.

Swiftly overpowering the suspect, the team disarmed him and ensured he received immediate medical attention. "Kamil was promptly rushed to Dr. Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini for medical treatment," the Special CP confirmed. "He was wanted in connection with a sensational shootout and assault that occurred outside Shaka Hotel near Jama Masjid on the night of May 17 and 18. Tragically, the incident resulted in the untimely death of Sameer, while the owner of Shaka Hotel, Akbar, alias Raju, sustained severe injuries," the Special CP stated.

It has been revealed that Kamil, accompanied by his associates identified as Rehan and Shabej, arrived at Shaka Hotel armed with firearms, baseball bats, iron rods, and other weapons at around 1:30 a.m. on May 18.

They initiated a violent attack on the hotel staff, including its owner, Akbar. "When Sameer, Akbar's brother-in-law, attempted to intervene, the assailants opened fire, resulting in Sameer's tragic demise. The attackers unleashed more than 25 rounds in the vicinity of the hotel, leaving a grim scene behind. Subsequently, during the investigation, the local police discovered approximately 20 spent shells at the site, indicating the intensity of the gunfire," the official said..
