Delhi HC Orders Ramdev to Remove Claims of Coronil as Covid-19 Cure

New Delhi: On Monday, the Delhi High Court instructed yoga guru Ramdev to retract his public statements claiming that 'Coronil' is a cure for Covid-19 rather than merely an immunity booster. The court also addressed his remarks questioning the effectiveness of allopathic treatments against Covid-19, mandating their removal within three days.

Justice Anup Bhambhani reserved the order on May 21 after hearing the arguments from both parties involved in the lawsuit.

In 2021, associations of doctors filed a lawsuit against Ramdev, his associate Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda. The lawsuit argued that Ramdev made "unsubstantiated claims" about 'Coronil' being a cure for Covid-19, which contradicted the drug's licensed use as an immunity booster.

The doctors sought a court directive to prevent Ramdev and others from making similar claims in the future.

The petitioners accused Ramdev of conducting a misinformation campaign and using a marketing strategy to boost the sales of 'Coronil' by presenting it as an alternative treatment for Covid-19.

On October 27, 2021, the high court issued summons to Ramdev and others, indicating that the lawsuit was not baseless and warranted legal action.

The doctors further claimed that Ramdev, a highly influential figure, was creating public doubt regarding the safety and effectiveness of allopathic treatments and Covid-19 vaccines. They described the misinformation campaign as an advertisement and marketing ploy to enhance the sales of 'Coronil', which Ramdev promoted as an alternative Covid-19 treatment.
