New Delhi: The Karkardooma court in Delhi on Friday (February 4, 2022) said that there can be no bar on the media from reporting on the contents of the charge sheet during court proceedings. Therefore, the media cannot be prevented from taking a screenshot of the charge sheet or placing it before the public. After taking a screenshot of the charge sheet for her report, the lawyer of accused Umar Khalid, Rebecca John, had alleged that during the trial of a larger conspiracy like the Delhi riots, Lawbeat took a screenshot of the WhatsApp chats and the contents of the charge sheet between the accused and made his report from it.

At the same time, not only other personal information, including the phone number of the accused, was made public. In fact, Lawbeat had extensively covered the trial in the court of Delhi riots. The charge sheet and supplementary charge sheet related to this hearing were reported on the content. Umar Khalid's lawyer said that the removal of screenshots shared by the lobby be ordered. On this, the Special Public Prosecutor had advised filing a separate application for the same. In fact, Rebecca John, the lawyer of JNU student leader Umar Khalid, who is accused in the anti-Hindu riots case in Delhi, had expressed her displeasure in the court against the media institutions who had made the WhatsApp chats highlighting the names of those linked to the riots public on social media.

Rebecca John had specifically named 'Lawbeat' in the court, saying that the way she shared WhatsApp messages was very disgusting. These screenshots should be deleted and screenshots of court proceedings should not be taken. During this time, it was advised by the prosecution that if those chats have to be deleted, then a suitable application can be filed for the same. This method would be more appropriate. In the midst of the ongoing hearing against Umar Khalid's bail plea, Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad had presented several important shreds of evidence against Khalid before Additional Sessions, Judge Amitabh Rawat. The prosecution had pointed out how the witness had pointed out that sticks, stones, red chillies and acid were deposited for the protest. Amit Prasad had asked what is the use of sticks, stones, red chillies and acid in any peaceful protest? He had said that all this was done under a premeditated conspiracy.
