Mumbai: In a significant development, the Delhi Police apprehended the primary suspect involved in the creation and dissemination of a deepfake video featuring popular actor Rashmika Mandanna. The deepfake, which surfaced in November 2023, replaced the face of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel with that of Mandanna. Authorities filed a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, addressing forgery, harming reputation, identity theft, and privacy violation.

Rashmika Mandanna, renowned for her roles in films like "Pushpa" and "Mission Majnu," expressed her distress over the video's misuse of technology. The incident not only raised concerns about the potential harm to individuals' reputations but also prompted the government to remind social media platforms of legal consequences associated with deepfakes.

Deepfake technology utilizes artificial intelligence to convincingly replace a person's likeness with another, leading to potential misuse and threats to privacy. Mandanna's case underscores the need for stringent measures to combat the growing trend of deepfake videos impacting the lives of public figures.

In a separate incident, a deepfake video featuring former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar recently surfaced, highlighting the broader challenges posed by such manipulative content. The Mumbai Police have initiated an investigation into the case, emphasizing the urgency of addressing deepfake-related offenses.
