New Delhi: Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 around the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and banned the use of drones and laser beams in the approach path of flights, ahead of the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 on June 4.

The restrictions come as a precautionary measure to facilitate VVIP aircraft movements at IGI Airport, amidst significant political developments in the state and the upcoming oath-taking ceremony of the next Prime Minister of India.

According to sources, the Air Traffic Control of IGI Airport has reported instances where pilots were distracted by laser beams, particularly during aircraft landings. This not only causes a disturbance but also poses a potential threat to the safety and security of passengers, crew, and the aircraft. The order highlights that many farmhouses, banquets, hotels, and restaurants near the airport use lights, including laser beams, during celebrations like marriages and parties, which can distract pilots.

Currently, there are no specific regulations in place to control the use of laser beams, especially in open areas during nighttime. The order underscores the urgent need to implement measures to prevent danger to human life, ensure aircraft safety, and mitigate the disturbance caused by the use of laser beams in and around IGI Airport.

Another directive has been issued to ban drones within the premises of the airport to maintain security and safety protocols.
