New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) would upgrade all of its 20 biogas facilities and sewage treatment plants (STP) in 15 months, according to Water Minister Satyendar Jain. The DJB also set prices for supplying treated water for irrigation to farmhouses and institutional institutions during a review meeting on wastewater treatment.

In contrast to conventional technology, which takes 4-5 years to complete, Jain has asked officials to modernise the STPs in 12-15 months using the latest state-of-the-art technology. "With the new way of upgradation, existing plants will be resurrected according to the most recent requirements without further civil work or tree removal, and with minimal impact on the neighbourhood," he said, adding that the move would be revolutionary.

Jain further requested that the DJB aim to complete all of these projects at least six months ahead of the real dates established for "Clean Yamuna." It should be emphasised that a biogas plant is a system that digests organic matter biologically and converts it to methane gas, which can then be converted to CNG or power.

This decision was made in order to clean the environment and produce as much biogas as possible, which can then be used to produce clean fuels such as bio-CNG and power. DJB now has biogas facilities with a capacity of 400 tonnes per day, however only 240 MGD are operational. Jain has given instructions to the bureaucrats to complete the capacity within a year.
