Delhi unlock: After Janpath, Sultanpuri market closed for violating COVID norms

Delhi unlock in phases has now made relaxations for Delhi markets. The markets shut over a period of time due to coronavirus cases resurgence are now likely open. However, some markets are not getting closed for not following COVID-19 protocols.

The authorities have now once again shut Janpath market due to violation of COVID-19 rules on Monday. The Delhi government on Tuesday closed another market namely Sultanpuri vegetable market for flouting coronavirus guidelines. As per Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) order, the Sabzi Mandi located at P-2 block in Sultanpuri will remain closed till Friday in view of the violations of Covid-appropriate behaviour and Covid norms. Rohini Sub-Divisional Magistrate Meena Tyagi said "gross violation" of norms was found during a surprise inspection conducted at the market on Monday. In its order on July 11, the Delhi government while shutting the famous Janpath market in Connaught Place had said, "In view of not following COVID appropriate behaviour norms the Director (Enforcement), NDMC and SHO, Connaught Place are hereby directed to enforce the order with immediate effect and submit a compliance report.”

Earlier, several markets including, markets in Lajpat Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and parts of Sadar Bazar and Karol Bagh were closed due to violation of COVID-19 guidelines. Meanwhile, Chamber of Trade and Industry said market associations could not be held responsible for maintaining law. The CTI raised objection to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on DDMA orders putting the onus for controlling crowds in markets.
