Denied Permission ? PM Modi's Scheduled Roadshow in Coimbatore Halted by District Police Authorities

Chennai: Permission for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned roadshow in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, scheduled for March 18, has been denied by district police authorities, according to sources on Friday. This decision has stirred significant attention, especially as it was meant to be a pivotal part of PM Modi's tour of South India leading up to the Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had submitted a request for a 3.6-kilometer roadshow in the industrial-textile city, intending to bolster support and rally voters.

However, the denial of permission is attributed to several reasons, with security concerns taking precedence. Coimbatore's communal history, marked by incidents like the 1998 serial blasts, adds complexity to such events. RS Puram, proposed as the culmination point of the roadshow, holds particular significance in this context. The area was directly impacted by the blasts, making it a sensitive location.

Moreover, the refusal also stems from potential inconvenience to the public, notably students, as the roadshow coincides with scheduled public exams on March 18 and 19. The presence of multiple schools along the proposed route adds weight to this concern. Officials emphasize the need to ensure smooth conduct of examinations without disruptions.

Additionally, Coimbatore's communal dynamics, coupled with the sensitive political climate, contribute to the cautious approach in granting permissions for political events like roadshows. Given the region's history, authorities are particularly vigilant about maintaining peace and harmony.

The denial underscores the intricate balance between political campaigning, security considerations, and public welfare. It prompts reflection on the challenges of conducting political activities in areas with sensitive communal histories and highlights the need for careful planning and coordination to ensure the safety and well-being of all stakeholders involved.
