In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced defeat in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad (Ayodhya) seat. Following this loss, reasons for the defeat are being investigated. Allegations have surfaced that, while numerous houses and shops were demolished in the name of development in the city of Ayodhya, compensation was not provided by the district administration. In response, the Ayodhya district administration has now issued a statement claiming that affected individuals have been compensated with 1,253 crore rupees.

According to reports, Ayodhya Collector Nitish Kumar stated that residents affected by the demolition of houses and shops for the construction of Ram Janmabhoomi Path, Bhakti Path, Ram Path, Panch Kosi Parikrama Marg, Chaudah Kosi Parikrama Marg, and Ayodhya Airport have received compensation totaling 1,253.06 crore rupees. The administration's statement comes at a time when people on social media are attributing BJP's loss to Samajwadi Party's candidate, Awadhesh Prasad, by a margin of 54,567 votes, to the public outrage over the demolition of hundreds of homes and shops for Ayodhya’s development.

In a statement released on Tuesday, District Magistrate Nitish Kumar explained that the beautification and widening of various major roads in Ayodhya were carried out in coordination with shopkeepers, building owners, and landowners on both sides of the roads to modernize and streamline traffic and transportation facilities. The affected individuals were rehabilitated according to regulations and were provided with compensation. The collector added that the beautification and widening of Ram Path, Bhakti Path, Ram Janmabhoomi Path, and Panch Kosi and Chaudah Kosi Parikrama Marg impacted 4,616 shopkeepers. Of these, 4,215 shopkeepers/traders, whose shops were partially affected by the widening, received compensation based on the size of the partially demolished shop, as their businesses were temporarily disrupted.

Additionally, the administration undertook the extensive beautification of their shops, allowing these shopkeepers to continue operating at the same location, and their businesses are now thriving. The beautification/widening of the roads resulted in the complete displacement of 401 shopkeepers, 339 of whom were allocated shops by the authority. Due to temporary business disruption caused by relocation, each shopkeeper received compensation ranging from 1 lakh to 10 lakh rupees based on the size of the displaced shop. The beautification/widening of the roads also led to the resettlement of 79 families.

Following the BJP’s defeat in the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat, some people claimed that the city's development and beautification efforts had caused local residents significant distress, contributing to BJP's loss. Parasnath Yadav, district president of the Samajwadi Party, also complained about houses being demolished for road widening, alleging injustice and displacement of residents. The district administration clarified that 1,845 landowners/building owners were affected, and they received 300.67 crore rupees in compensation and grants. Similarly, for the construction of the newly built Maharshi Valmiki International Airport, affected families were rehabilitated according to regulations.

The statement also noted that land acquisition for the development projects was conducted in coordination with and with the consent of the affected landowners/building owners, with a total payment of 952.39 crore rupees made to their accounts. Prior to the Ram Temple Bhoomi Poojan ceremony on January 22, development works such as the construction of Ram Janmabhoomi Path, Bhakti Path, Ram Path, Panch Kosi Parikrama Marg, Chaudah Kosi Parikrama Marg, and Ayodhya Airport were carried out.
