Hyderabad: The Telangana government has issued notices to 200 industries in Sangareddy district to install digital flow meters for groundwater use. Once the digital flow meter is installed, usage of water in excess of the prescribed amount may result in heavy charges every month. Major industrial units will also have to pay up to Rs 20 per liter if the water withdrawal exceeds the limit set by the government.

Similarly, suppliers of bulk water through tankers will also have to pay abstraction charges depending on the quantity of water and the location of the unit. The payment to bulk water supply agencies will be Rs 12 per cubic meter in Medak district, and Rs 120 per cubic meter in Greater Hyderabad. Apart from this, the housing society will be charged an intangible fee at the rate of Re 1 per cubic meter for groundwater up to 50 cubic meters per month and Rs 2 per cubic meter for over 50.

It is mandatory for all new and existing industries and large apartments to install flow meters and obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the State Ground Water Authority once in every two and five years respectively. Non-compliance of NOC guidelines will attract a fine between Rs 50,000 to Rs 10,00,000 depending on the nature of the violation.
