Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today, March 22, reviewed the situation after an earthquake hit parts of north India late on yesterday. The chief minister inquired about the situation from Dr Ranjit Kumar Sinha, Secretary of Uttarakhand Disaster Management.
As per the official statement, "The Chief Minister asked the Disaster Management Secretary to communicate on the situation after obtaining information from all the districts and to exert vigilance.
On Tuesday evening, there were earthquake shocks reported throughout north India, including in Delhi and surrounding districts. As a precaution, many people fled to open places.
According to the National Institute for Seismology, an earthquake of a 6.6 Richter Scale magnitude occurred on Tuesday, 21 March, 133 km SSE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan.
The US Geological Service stated that the earthquake's epicentre was 40 kilometres south-southeast of the Afghan town of Jurm and added that it also shook sections of India, including the nation's capital New Delhi.
Tuesday saw the official opening of the "International Conference on Application of Modern Technologies for Disaster Management" in Dehradun, which was earlier attended by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Himalayan states, according to him, are especially susceptible to calamities and their effects.
"Natural calamities like landslides, cloud bursts, forest fires, and other disasters frequently occur here, so it makes sense that they would result in significant human and financial loss. Being proactive is the only way to deal with these catastrophes. Only a proactive strategy will be able to minimise the occurrence of calamities " he added.
In addition to disasters, the chief minister stated that earthquakes pose a significant threat to our state. In order to prevent such disasters, special attention must be devoted to the use of contemporary technologies for pre-disaster warnings.
