Every year on May 2nd, coastal nations unite to observe World Tuna Day, shedding light on crucial aspects:

Raising awareness about the plight of tuna, an endangered species due to overfishing.
Educating about the significance of tuna.
Advocating for sustainable fishing methods.
Origin Story:

World Tuna Day debuted on May 2, 2017.

This significant date stems from the United Nations General Assembly's resolution A/RES/71/124, passed on December 7, 2016.

What Makes World Tuna Day Significant?

Tuna, a warm-blooded fish capable of regulating its body temperature, thrives across various seas globally. Surprisingly, there are over two dozen tuna species, ranging in size from a few feet to over 500 pounds in weight. Tuna boasts rich nutrients like Omega-3, Vitamin B12, proteins, and minerals, making it a vital component of human diet and commerce.

United Nations reports underscore the pivotal role tuna plays in numerous countries, supporting food security, economic growth, job creation, government revenue, and livelihoods. Over 80 nations engage in tuna fishing, with fleets expanding, particularly in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Globally, yearly harvests yield around 7 million metric tons of tuna and related species.

However, the surge in tuna demand has endangered several species. Overfishing, particularly in certain regions, has pushed some types of tuna to the brink of extinction. This not only jeopardizes tuna populations but also disrupts marine ecosystems.

In light of these challenges, there's a pressing need for sustainable fishing practices. World Tuna Day serves as a platform to underscore tuna's value, raise awareness about its endangered status, and advocate for eco-friendly fishing techniques.

World Tuna Day is more than a celebration; it's a call to action, urging individuals and nations to safeguard this invaluable marine resource for future generations.
