New Delhi: Former Rajya Sabha member and also Lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar on Monday said that its disguesting to Link Ramzan with Lok Sabha polls. The lyricist further urged the Election Commission to not consider the controversy for even “a second.”

Akhtar said that he found this kind of “convoluted version of secularism” as “repulsive and revolting.” He took to Twitter and wrote, “I find this whole discussion about Ramzan and elections totally disgusting. This is the kind of distorted and convoluted version of secularism that to me is repulsive, revolting and intolerable. EC shouldn’t consider it for a second.” Lyrisct tweet had garnered more than 5,000 ‘likes’ and 900 ‘retweets’ at the time of publishing this article.

Former Rajya Sabha member statement came on a day after Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and Trinamool Congress leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim questioned the seven-phase Lok Sabha election schedule, announced by the Election Commission on Sunday. The leaders argued that as dates for Lok Sabha polls clashed with Ramzan, which is tentatively expected to be observed in May, it may prove difficult for Muslim voters observing fast to cast their votes.

Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also rubbished the controversy, he said, "This whole controversy is totally uncalled for and unnecessary. I would request the political parties not to use the Muslim community and Ramzan for whatever reasons you have.”
2019 Lok Sabha elections will take place in seven phases, beginning from April 11 and ending on May 19.
