Japan:Doctors attempted to save former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for nearly five hours after he was shot this morning, but he died due to a "wide gaping hole in the heart," according to the hospital. Shinzo Abe, 67, was giving a poll campaign speech when he was shot twice in the neck from behind in Nara, about 500 kilometres from Tokyo. While ambulances arrived, some people were seen attempting to revive him.

"When he arrived, he was in cardiac arrest. Resuscitation was performed. Blood transfusions were also performed. Unfortunately, he died at 5:03 p.m "At the hospital, Professor Hidetada Fukushima said. One of the two bullets from the seemingly homemade gun penetrated his heart, while the other aggravated his wounds.

The shooter, Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old former member of Japan's navy, did not attempt to flee. According to NHK, he told police that he was "dissatisfied" with Abe and wanted to kill him. Officials later discovered explosives at the shooter's home. According to several news outlets citing the defence ministry, he served in Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (the navy) for three years until around 2005.

Fumio Kishida, Japan's Prime Minister, called the assassination a "unforgivable act." "Abe served as Prime Minister for eight years and eight months, a record in Japanese politics. With his outstanding leadership and execution, he led this country through many internal and external challenges."
