New Delhi: Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has informed the House during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament that the toll rates for national highways are uniform across the country. Kanimozhi NVN Somu, a Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu, had questioned in the House about the toll rate to be charged per kilometre on the National Highway of Tamil Nadu and sought full details of it. He had asked whether the travel toll rate per kilometre on national highways in Tamil Nadu is higher than in other states. And have passengers in their state paid more toll tax than other states? The issue of increase in toll rates in toll gates in Tamil Nadu older than 10 years and demand for withdrawal of toll collection was also raised on the table of the House.
Replying to this, Union Road Transport Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that toll rates are the same across the country for passengers travelling on national highways including Tamil Nadu. Gadkari said state governments regularly make representations on issues related to toll plazas. In a reply tabled in the House, Nitin Gadkari said, "However, the total toll revenue received is diverted back to the development of roads, in which the state governments extend their support.''
