New Delhi: In a significant gesture of recognition, the Commonwealth of Dominica has announced that it will award Prime Minister Narendra Modi the prestigious Dominica Award of Honour. This award is being bestowed upon him for his outstanding contributions to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic and for his efforts in strengthening the ties between India and Dominica.

The award will be presented by the President of Dominica during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit. It is a high honor, given to individuals who have provided meritorious service to the development of Dominica. Notably, the Dominica Award of Honour has previously been received by world leaders like Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader.

India’s support to Dominica, particularly during the pandemic, has been pivotal. In February 2021, India sent 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Dominica, which not only helped the country in its vaccination efforts but also enabled it to assist neighboring Caribbean nations.

PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Guyana marks a significant milestone, being the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in more than 50 years. This visit further highlights the strengthening of relations between India and the Caribbean region.

Dominica has also acknowledged India’s assistance in the fields of education, information technology, and climate resilience-building, all of which have flourished under PM Modi’s leadership. The country recognized his contribution to sustainable development globally, particularly in addressing climate challenges.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica expressed his gratitude for PM Modi's solidarity during the global health crisis, calling the award a symbol of the deep partnership between the two nations. “Prime Minister Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, especially during our time of need. We look forward to deepening our collaboration and continuing our shared journey towards progress and resilience,” Skerrit said.

In response to the honor, PM Modi highlighted the importance of global collaboration in tackling pressing challenges such as climate change and geopolitical issues. He reaffirmed India's commitment to working closely with Dominica and other Caribbean nations to address these global concerns.
