President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly offered Republican Representative Elise Stefanik the position of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to sources familiar with the decision.
In an emailed statement, Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance team, said, "President-Elect Trump will begin making decisions on who will serve in his second Administration soon. Those decisions will be announced when they are made." Leavitt did not confirm or deny the reports regarding Stefanik.
On Saturday, Trump shared that former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would not be considered for roles in his upcoming administration. Haley, who served as the U.S. ambassador to the UN during Trump’s previous term, endorsed him for the presidency despite their past conflicts during the Republican primaries.
In preparation for his inauguration on January 20, Trump has been meeting with various candidates for key roles in his administration. Reports indicate that on Friday, he held discussions with prominent investor Scott Bessent, a possible nominee for U.S. Treasury Secretary.
Nikki Haley previously served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during Trump’s term, gaining attention for her strong stances on key international issues. Although she was once a critic of Trump, notably during her 2024 presidential primary bid where she ran against him, Haley endorsed Trump in the general election, demonstrating support for his vision despite their past differences. Pompeo, who served as Secretary of State and led critical foreign policy initiatives, had also been speculated as a potential candidate for a position in Trump’s cabinet, but it appears the former president is choosing to take his administration in a different direction.
Ahead of his inauguration on January 20, Trump has been actively meeting with potential candidates to shape his cabinet. His team is working swiftly to make key appointments, aiming to have a robust leadership group in place to begin implementing his agenda immediately.
According to reports, Trump met on Friday with Scott Bessent, a prominent investor and financial strategist, as a potential pick for U.S. Treasury Secretary. Bessent, known for his extensive experience in investment and financial markets, is being considered to helm the Treasury Department. This potential appointment reflects Trump’s focus on economic leadership to drive his policy goals forward, should Bessent formally accept the position.
