New Delhi:- The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will this week auction off a number of spectrum bands and radio waves with licenses that expire in 2024 to the industry regulator, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), according to people familiar with the matter. Officials say it's possible. The transport ministry plans to hold an auction in the March quarter of this year, the person said.
"The DoT will send a notice to TRAI in the next few days about an auction for the 37 GHz band and radio licenses, which will be renewed in 2024," said the person, who asked not to be named.
References are expected to include spectrum auctions in the 600-megahertz band, as well as frequencies that were not sold at auctions to be held in 2022.

The government offered 10 frequency bands, but there were no tenders for the 600MHz, 800MHz, and 2300MHz bands. About two-thirds of the bids were for the 5G bands (3300MHz and 26GHz), and more than a quarter of the demand was for the 700MHz band, left unsold from the last two auctions (2016 and 2021).
The DoT expects TRAI to soon recommend auction guidelines for satellite communications spectrum for inclusion in auctions scheduled for the March quarter.

However, only one satellite operator requested spectrum allocation through an administrative route rather than an auction route.
Some of the Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea licenses are set to expire in 2024, and the spectrum held by those licenses will also be auctioned in the March quarter, according to people familiar with the matter.

"If TRAI's recommendations are received by January, the DoT will be able to hold an auction," said the official.
The DoT has made an auction regarding the spectrum bands and the radio waves in 2024 as their license expires next year to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
