India's veteran athletics coach and Dronacharya Award winner Joginder Singh Saini died on Sunday at the age of 90. Saini, who has given many star players to the country in the field of track and field, has been struggling with the problems related to aging for some time. Saini is credited with refining some of India's most respected track and field players. He was the head coach of the national athletics team for several years between the 1970s and 1990s. On his death, AFI President Adile Sumariwala said, "I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of my colleague, my head coach and mentor JS Saini."
He said in his message, "He loved athletics and till his last day he contributed to the Indian Athletics Federation. He was my friend and guide and with his advice he helped me a lot in my role as AFI President. ''

According to reports, Saini, born on 1 January 1930 in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, became an athletics coach in 1954. He became the head coach of the then Indian Amateur Athletics Federation in 1990. Saini was awarded the Dronacharya Award in 1997 for her contribution to Indian athletics. He was the head coach of the Indian team that won 18 medals, including eight golds at the 1978 Asian Games.
