New Delhi: 142 syndicates transporting and trading drugs in different parts of India are on the target of NCB. NCB in its report has claimed that these 142 syndicates trade drugs worth 140,000 crores and about 2 crore persons consume them. The perplexing figures of the NCB have come to the fore when it is investigating drug cartels in Bollywood and Kannada film industry. According to NCB's analysis, these syndicates play an important role in the business of billions of rupees. They have relations with countries in Western Europe, Canada, Africa, Australia, South American, and West Asia.

NCB has guessed that 360 metric tonnes (MT) of retail-quality drugs and about 36 metric tonnes (MT) of bulk-quality drugs are smuggled into various districts every year in the country.  2 crore people consume about 1,000 kilograms of high-quality drugs per day. Punjab still remains a center of drug smuggling. Last year, 74,620 persons were arrested in 36 States and Union Territories out of which 15,449 are from Punjab. So far, 18,600 persons have been arrested in the year 2020 in which 5,299 persons are from Punjab. All these have been arrested under the NDPS Act.

The agency also submitted the report to Home Minister Amit Shah recently after which action was directed to be taken against these syndicates. Large drug syndicates are being processed by NCB chief Rakesh Asthana. The CBI has examined several high profile cases including the VVIP chopper case, fodder scam, and bank fraud by Vijay Mallya.
