The Philippines is currently debating whether to follow Vietnam's lead and ban Warner Bros. 'Barbie' following a scene that shows a map of the South China Sea with the contentious 'nine-dash line' in it.
We confirm that the Board has reviewed the movie Barbie today, July 4, 2023, according to a notice that was recently published on the website of the Philippines' Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. The assigned Committee on First Review is currently debating Warner Brothers F.E. Inc.'s request for a permit to exhibit.
Discussions about whether certain nations should allow the commercial release of the movie in their areas have been sparked by this controversy. The first country to act was Vietnam, which outlawed the screening of the Barbie movie there. The "nine-dash line," a series of line segments asserting China's territorial claims in the South China Sea, was visible on a map in the movie, which led Vietnamese authorities to make their decision.
Among other close neighbours, Vietnam disputes China's assertions and sees the use of the nine-dash line in the film as an infringement on their national sovereignty. media reported, "We do not grant a license for the American movie 'Barbie' to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line."
Although she did not demand a ban, she added “At the minimum, our cinemas should include an explicit disclaimer that the nine-dash line is a figment of China’s imagination.”
Due to the inclusion of a map displaying the nine-dash line, Vietnam's National Film Evaluation Council announced on Monday that it was prohibiting all screenings of the movie. Ryan Gosling plays Ken, and Margot Robbie plays Barbie in the Greta Gerwig-helmed film "Barbie." The films "Uncharted" and "Abominable" were both outlawed in the Philippines in 2022 for the same offence.
