Howrah (West Bengal): Eastern Railway is installing LED TVs in local trains, making it easier for train passengers to fight the trip blues.

According to Eastern Railway authorities, DRM Manish Jain of Howrah launched the inaugural first trip of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) local equipped with LED TV screen at 11.15 a.m. on Tuesday from platform number 8 of the former premises of Howrah station.

Entertainment programmes will be available on the LED TVs and key information about railways will also be available.

To mark the launch of this new project, a function was also held at Howrah station. Following the inauguration, Jain said that an arrangement had been made with a private enterprise. The company plans to install LCD TVs in trains that will not only entertain passengers but will also show railway and central government programmes and allow people to advertise.

"It's already begun in Mumbai and Mysore." It's a first for the Eastern Railway. It is simply a source of amusement and knowledge. Only healthy and good programmes will run in it. He stated that four televisions will be installed in each rake's room. "2,400 LCDs will be fitted in Eastern Railway's 50 local trains," Jain said.

An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages, using electricity as the motive power. An EMU requires no separate locomotive, as electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of the carriages.
