Kolkata: Former High Court judge and BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay has received a show cause notice from the Election Commission over his “improper, undignified” remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Election Commission’s action came after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a complaint against Gangopadhyay, accusing him of making "denigrating statements" that reflect "indecent behaviour and a misogynistic mindset."
The TMC quoted a speech by Gangopadhyay in which he said, “Mamata Banerjee, how much are you being sold for? Your rate is 10 lakhs, why? Because you're getting your makeup done by Keya Seth? Mamata Banerjee, is she even a woman? I keep wondering sometimes.” These remarks were allegedly made during a public meeting in Haldia on May 15. The TMC condemned Gangopadhyay’s comments as “vulgar and uncouth,” stating that they were completely beyond the bounds of decency and morality. They argued that his remarks not only lacked decorum but also showed blatant disregard for the dignity of West Bengal's only lady Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.
The Election Commission, in its notice, described Gangopadhyay's comments as “improper, injudicious, beyond dignity in every sense of the term, in bad taste,” and a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The Commission has requested a response from Gangopadhyay by May 20.
