JHARKAND: In a significant development on the political front, the Election Commission (EC) has officially declared the scheduling of by-elections in seven crucial Assembly constituencies spanning five states, set to take place on the 5th of September. These by-elections hold great importance, as they are poised to reshape the political landscape in the respective regions.
The constituencies slated for these by-elections are as follows: Dumri in Jharkhand, Puthuppally in Kerala, two seats in Tripura, including the notable Dhanpur, Dhupguri in West Bengal, and Ghosi and Bageshwar in Uttar Pradesh. This announcement by the EC comes after much anticipation and speculation surrounding the fate of these vacant seats.
Notably, the EC's decision comes in the wake of recent developments in the political arena. The Supreme Court's stay on the conviction of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case has reinstated his membership in the Lok Sabha, adding an intriguing dimension to the upcoming by-polls. Sources within the EC suggest that the commission exercised prudence, opting to wait for the apex court's ruling on Rahul Gandhi's case before formally announcing the by-election for his Wayanad seat.
Among the constituencies going to by-polls, Dumri in Jharkhand and Puthuppally in Kerala have garnered particular attention. Puthuppally's vacancy emerged following the unfortunate demise of Oommen Chandy, a respected political figure. In Tripura, two seats will undergo by-elections, including Dhanpur, which became vacant due to the resignation of Pratima Bhoumik. Dhupguri in West Bengal and Ghosi and Bageshwar in Uttar Pradesh round out the list of constituencies set to experience the electoral fervor once again.
As per the EC's outlined schedule, the window for filing nominations for these pivotal by-polls spans from the 10th to the 17th of August. The culmination of this electoral exercise will occur on the 8th of September, when the votes cast by the electorate will be counted, shaping the destiny of these constituencies and potentially influencing the national political landscape.
