Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced on Thursday that its MPs will donate one month's salary to the Chief Minister's fund for Sri Lanka.  This comes after  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged people to contribute to humanitarian relief material that is supposed to be sent to Sri Lanka in their economic crisis situation.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution in this regard, requesting authorization to deliver rice and essential medications to Sri Lanka as humanitarian relief, which was granted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar stated that the Tamil Nadu government's support can be used to enhance what the Indian government is providing, adding that Sri Lanka favours inclusive distribution.

On the Tamil Nadu government's proposal to give humanitarian aid to the island nation, Jaishankar stated that the state government might ask the TN Chief Secretary to cooperate with the Centre for the delivery of relief supplies.

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing severe food and electricity shortages, leading the government to seek assistance from its neighbours. Foreign exchange problems caused by a tourism ban during the COVID-19 pandemic are blamed for the slump. The country is unable to purchase sufficient fuel and gas, and its citizens are deprived of basic necessities.
