Chennai:  Students of MBBS first year of Government Madurai Medical College, Tamil Nadu took the 'Maharishi Charaka Oath' in place of Hippocratic Oath during the initiation ceremony i.e. Induction Orientation Ceremony on Saturday (30 April 2022). This is the first time in the country, when medical students have taken the oath of Maharishi Charak instead of Hippocratic. The MK Stalin government of Tamil Nadu has indirectly expressed displeasure over this change. It is being told that Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiaga Rajan and Revenue Minister P Murthy were also present when the students were taking the 'Maharishi Charak Oath' at the initiation ceremony.

According to reports, in the matter of administering the 'Maharishi Charak Oath', the state government has taken immediate action and removed the dean of the college, Dr A Rathinavel from his post. The Tamil Nadu government has transferred the dean and put him on the waiting list. In a press release, the Tamil Nadu government has said, 'All medical colleges have been administering the Hippocratic Oath to medical students for a long time. In such a situation, taking Maharishi Charak's oath in place of Hippocratic Oath is condemnable. The dean of the college has been removed from his post and he has been put on the waiting list. Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam has directed the Director of the Medical Department, Dr. Narayana Babu, to investigate into the violation of rules. The state government has said that it will ask the heads of all government medical colleges to provide Hippocratic Oath to the students at all times through a circular.

Let us inform that recently, the medical education regulator National Medical Commission (NMC) had recommended the replacement of 'Hippocratic Oath' in the new syllabus of MBBS and 'Maharishi Charak Oath' for the students studying it in the country. According to the new guidelines, 'It is recommended to take the modified 'Maharishi Charak Oath' on the admission of a candidate in medical education. A few days back, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had also said in Parliament that the 'Maharishi Charak oath' would be optional and medical students would not be bound to take it.

What is the difference between the Charaka Oath and the Hippocratic Oath?

Let us tell you that the method of oath which is present in the present time, is taken in the name of Hippocrates i.e. Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates. Hippocrates is also known as the Father of Medicine. This oath is taken during the White Coat Ceremony. For years doctors all over the world have been taking this oath. The oath that has now been recommended is in the name of Maharishi Charak, the great physician of Ayurveda. Maharishi Charaka was an Indian and is also considered the father of Ayurveda. It was he who wrote this oath, which is the Sanskrit text of Ayurveda. The meaning of both oaths is almost the same, but the language and its origin are different.
