New Delhi: The ED opposed the bail plea of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the apex court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the ED said that on behalf of Chidambaram it has been said that I am not a badge, so why am I being kept in jail? The answer is that the seriousness of this crime affects society.

Tushar Mehta further said that the common man's faith in the system will be lost. The accused was in the post of Finance Minister. Mehta said that a witness has refused to sit face to face with him. That witness said that Chidambaram is very influential. Tushar Mehta said, will we get the act done only when the accused who committed the crime is Ranga-Billa? Mehta said that Chidambaram is so influential that a witness backed away from making a statement before Chidambaram. It was to his effect that the witness flatly refused to confront him. We have recorded his statement which is given in a sealed envelope to the court.

Mehta said that Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram is yet to be arrested in the ED case. He has not yet petitioned for anticipatory bail. He has challenged some provisions of money laundering. Therefore, due to the stay on those provisions in the court, they are still left. They will be arrested as soon as the court stay is removed.
