The ED has seized Rs 3.57 crore in cash after raiding tourism and travel firms and their CAs in Delhi-NCR, which are investigating alleged irregularities in processing e-visa applications for foreigners wishing to travel to India.
On Saturday, the Central Investigation Agency said in its statement that on July 9, under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, it raided 8 areas in Delhi and Ghaziabad. The agency said in a statement that the raids have been carried out in the directors and their chartered accountants of several travel companies and remnants of Rs 3.57 crore in cash and offices and digital records were seized. Specific input from the ED was that the entities were involved in the unauthorized receipt of foreign remittances through payment gateways in the name of providing e-visa services to foreigners.
Meanwhile, the agency further said that preliminary investigation has found that two such entities received foreign remittances of over Rs 200 crore for processing Indian e-visa applications of foreigners without any authorization from the government. These entities were involved in suspicious transactions of high value. It has also been found that some chartered accountants played an important role in managing the affairs of these entities and were behind the suspicious transactions done by them. The ED also said that the seizure of unaccounted cash during the raid has raised further doubts about the operation of such entities and violations of statutory requirements. An investigation is going on and a senior agency official also said in his statement that the directors and officers of these firms will be questioned.
