New Delhi: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will attend the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 as the chief guest. The Ministry of External Affairs has given information in this regard on Sunday (November 27). The Ministry of External Affairs has said in a statement, 'This is the first time that the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt will be the Chief Guest on our Republic Day.' PM Narendra Modi sent a formal invitation to El-Sisi, which was handed over to the Egyptian President by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on October 16. Both countries are also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

The Ministry of External Affairs has said in its statement that Egypt has been invited as the 'guest country' during India's chairmanship of G-20 in 2022-23. India and Egypt enjoy friendly relations based on deep civilizational and people-to-people ties, the statement said. Leaders of friendly nations have been gracing the Republic Day celebrations since the 1950s. In 1950, the then President of Indonesia Sukarno was also invited as the Chief Guest.

Let us tell you that in 1952, 1953, and 1966, no foreign leader attended the Republic Day celebrations as Chief Guest. In the year 2021, the then British PM Boris Johnson was invited as the chief guest, but he canceled his visit due to increasing cases of coronavirus in Britain. This year India sent invitations to the leaders of 5 Central Asian republics for the Republic Day celebrations.
