New Delhi: The election dates for two Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh have been announced. The Election Commission has announced the date for the election on Thursday (29 August). While giving the information, the Election Commission has said that the notification for the Rajya Sabha by-election will be issued on September 5. Both voting and counting will be held on September 23.

As per the election schedule issued by the Election Commission, the last date for nomination is September 12, while the last date for withdrawal is 16th September. It is noteworthy that Neerja Shekhar,  a Rajya Sabha member of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and son of former Prime Minister Chandrasekhar and Surendra Singh Nagar had resigned from his post. At the same time, Sanjay Seth, who was the SP leader, had also resigned from the party. After resigning from the SP, the three leaders had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Along with the Rajya Sabha by-elections, by-elections are to be held for the assembly seats in UP as well. In Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has issued a notification to Hamirpur for the time being, out of the by-polls for 13 assembly seats. The results will be declared by voting on September 23 and counting will be on September 27.
