New Delhi: The dates for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra are likely to be announced today. The Election Commission held a meeting on the issue at 4 PM yesterday. The meeting reviewed the situation in the two states over the forthcoming elections. The election dates for Maharashtra and Haryana are likely to be announced on Saturday. Another state where assembly elections are due later this year will be announced after the announcement of the elections in both the states.

The elections in Jharkhand are expected to be held in December, the end of the year. The term of the Assembly expires in the first week of January. A senior Election Commission official said, polling in both the states is likely to take place before Diwali in the third week of October. But this time the election process will be completed within 30 days instead of 45 days. This can be understood in this way.

In 2014, the dates for the assembly elections were announced on 12th September and the polling came on 15th October and the results came on 19th October. This time, if the announcement is made in the week, the polling will be declared by the third week of October and thereafter by the end of October. Assembly elections for 288 seats in Maharashtra and 90 seats in Haryana are scheduled to be held by the first week of November. In all the three states, the ruling BJP government is in power.
