Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has cleared the way for her arrival in the assembly. The Election Commission has announced bye-elections to three of the vacant assembly seats in West Bengal and one in Odisha on September 30. Bye-elections to Bhavanipur, Shamsherganj, and Jangipur seats are due in Bengal. Bye-elections are also being held in the Pipli seat of Odisha. The election code of conduct has come into force in these seats from today itself.

At present 31 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats are vacant in various states. Bye-elections are proposed on these. But due to corona infection, the Commission has announced bye-elections to Bhawanipur and two other seats at the special request of the West Bengal government instead of bypolls to all the seats. The code of conduct for these by-elections has already come into force. The gazette notification for the bypoll will be issued on September 6 and nominations can be filed from then till September 13. Voting will be held on September 30 and vote counting will be done on October 3.

On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee's way to the assembly has become easier after the election commission's announcement. In fact, Mamata Banerjee's party may have won the assembly elections, but Mamata herself lost the election from Nandigram. Mamata had suffered a setback from Suvendu Adhikari who joined BJP from TMC. In this case, TMC MLA Shobhandev Chattopadhyay has vacated the Bhavanipur seat for Mamata Banerjee. Mamata has also become an MLA twice from this seat.
