Guwahati: The Election Commission has now given the right to cast votes to people outside the National Civil Register (NRC) in Assam. However, those excluded from the NRC list will get these rights only until the civil tribunal gives a verdict against them. All these are placed in the category of 'D' voters. According to the media report, the Election Commission said that every voter in the voter list will have the right to cast a vote until the decision of the Citizen Tribunal comes.
It is noteworthy that the final list of NRC has been released in Assam on 31 August. About 19 lakh people are not included in the list. In Assam, people whose names did not figure in the final list of NRC have turned against it to the civil tribunal and their claims are under trial. Accordingly, according to the Election Commission, all the voters in the voter list will have the right to vote till the decision of the Citizen Tribunal comes.
What is the 'D' category of voter?
Suspicious or 'D' voters are a category of voters in Assam, this category includes those whose citizenship is uncertain or disputed. The Election Commission introduced it in 1997 while revising the state's voter list. While 'D' voters remain in the voter list of Assam, they cannot vote in elections unless their case is determined by a foreign tribunal.
