Kolkata:  Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, accusing them of attempting to manipulate institutions like the Election Commission of India (ECI) for their political gain. He asserted that the BJP's removal of West Bengal's Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, was part of this agenda.

Ghosh emphasized that the BJP's actions were driven by their desire to support their state organizations, particularly in West Bengal where they anticipate electoral defeat. Despite these efforts, Ghosh expressed confidence in the Trinamool Congress and its leader Mamata Banerjee, asserting that they would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

The Election Commission's decision to remove Rajeev Kumar came amid criticism from the BJP and other opposition parties regarding alleged police inaction in addressing issues in Sandeshkhali. The unrest in the Sandeshkhali area stemmed from demands for justice against purported atrocities by Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and associates.

In addition to Kumar's removal, the Election Commission also ordered the removal of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Chahal and other senior officials from various states. This move, aimed at maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, included the removal of Home Secretaries from six states and General Administrative Department secretaries from Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh.

Furthermore, the Election Commission directed state governments to transfer officers involved in election-related tasks who have completed three years in their current positions or are serving in their home districts. The removal of officials holding dual charges, particularly those serving as Chief Minister's office-bearers, aims to ensure impartiality and neutrality in matters concerning law and order and deployment of forces during elections.

These measures, according to the Commission, uphold the highest standards of integrity and impartiality, thereby ensuring a fair and level playing field in the electoral process.
