Kabul: A tragic traffic accident in southern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of at least 21 individuals, while 38 others have been reported injured, according to a statement released by the provincial traffic department. The incident took place early on Sunday morning in the Gerashk district of Helmand province, along the major highway connecting the southern city of Kandahar to the western province of Herat.

Preliminary reports suggest that the accident occurred when a motorbike collided with a passenger bus, resulting in a subsequent collision with a fuel tanker traveling on the opposite side of the road. Qadratullah, a traffic official in Helmand, indicated that an investigation into the accident is currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events. Hzatullah Haqqani, a spokesperson for the Helmand police chief, provided additional details, stating that eleven of the injured individuals have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the accident.

The tragic incident underscores the ongoing challenges associated with road safety in Afghanistan, where traffic accidents are unfortunately all too common. Factors contributing to such accidents include poor road conditions and a lack of adherence to traffic regulations by drivers. Efforts to improve road infrastructure and promote safer driving practices remain critical in reducing the frequency and severity of traffic accidents across the country.
