Haryana: Voting on two seats of Rajya Sabha will be held today

The election is going to be held on 26 March for the two Rajya Sabha seats vacated from Haryana. For this, the leaders have started lobbying. One seat was vacated by the resignation of Ramkumar Kashyap, who reached Rajya Sabha on an INLD ticket. The second seat is to be vacated on April 9 after the completion of the term of Congress Rajya Sabha member Kumari Selja. Along with the BJP-JJP alliance in both the seats, Congress leaders have started lobbying heavily.

After resigning from the membership of Rajya Sabha, Ramkumar Kashyap joined BJP and won the election from the Indri Assembly seat in Karnal district. This seat has been vacant since then. In February 2014, INLD chief Omprakash Chautala gave Ramkumar Kashyap a ticket in the Rajya Sabha elections. Kashyap resigned from Rajya Sabha membership at a time when his tenure was nearing completion and INLD was going through a phase of disintegration.

In February 2014, Kumari Sailja of Congress became a member of Rajya Sabha. His term is till 9 April, but the election for this seat will also be held on 26 March. Under Section 151-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if the remaining term of the outgoing Rajya Sabha member for the vacant seat is less than one year, the Election Commission does not get a by-election for that seat.
