Demand for electric vehicles does not seem to be increasing in the market even during the festive season. The government is making claims to introduce several schemes to increase the sales of electric vehicles. But in contrast, the sales of electric two-wheelers have come down drastically under a special Fame-2 incentive scheme of the government. According to the data, sales of electric two-wheelers declined by 94 percent in the first half of this financial year.

Figures released by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) show that in the second phase of the Fester Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles launched from April to September this year, only 3,000 were introduced to encourage the sale of electric vehicles.

Whereas this figure was 48,671 units in the same period last year. Where low-speed electric two-wheelers are available in the price of 55 to 60 thousand rupees, then high-speed vehicles cost more than 75 thousand rupees. Apart from this, after four years of use, the cost of changing the battery in high-speed electric two-wheelers varies from 40 to 45 thousand rupees. At the same time, if the government subsidizes low-speed Lithium Ion electric two-wheelers under the Fame-2 scheme, then these vehicles will be available at a price of up to 40 thousand rupees.

It is to be noted that there has been a tremendous decline in sales of electric vehicles under the Fame-2 scheme. According to the ET report, not only have subsidies reduced under the FAME-II scheme, but the products on which these incentives are being offered are quite expensive, leading to buyers buying more low-speed vehicles. According to industry figures, 49,000 low-speed electric two-wheelers have been sold in six months.

Sources in the industry say that these low-speed electric two-wheelers are fitted with small lithium ion batteries, which makes them out of Fame-2 subsidies and benefits. Only those two-wheeler electric vehicles are considered eligible under this scheme, with a maximum speed of 40 km per hour and a distance of 80 km on a single charge. At the same time, it is very important to have a large battery in it. Due to which they become expensive.
