An elephant is very important in Indian religion and culture. According to Hindu religion, Gajapujavidhi fast is kept on the full moon day of Ashwin month. Description of Gajendra Moksha Katha is also available. Now today we are going to tell you about the importance if the elephant in religious books. Today we are going to tell you about Airavat.

Indra has an elephant named Airavat whom he rides. It is said that this elephant was the 5th jewel out of 14 gems that came out during the Samudra Manthan done by the gods and asuras. Airavat was the king of white elephants. 'Ira' means water, hence the elephant born from 'Irawat' (sea) is named 'Airavat'. Airavat was given to Indra at the time of sharing of the gems received, due to which it also got the name 'Indrahasti' or 'Indrakunjar'. It is difficult to find a white elephant with four teeth.

In the eighth chapter of Mahabharata, Bhishma Parv, the terrain from India to the north has been called 'Airavat' instead of Uttar Kuru. This name has also come in Jain literature and the part of the north, that is, Tibet, Mongolia and Siberia of Russia, but the north Kuru land was near the North Pole, probably this elephant may have been found in this area.
