Elon Musk's company, xAI, launched its newest AI chatbot, Grok-3. Musk calls it the SMARTEST AI ON EARTH. The launch took place on February 17, 2025, and during the event, Musk showed off the features of Grok 3, like its advanced reasoning, text-to-video skills, and self-correction skills.

What Does GROK Mean?

Musk also said where the name GROK comes from. It is a term from Robert Heinlein’s science fiction book Stranger in a Strange Land. It means to truly know something deeply. Musk pointed out that the name reflects the AI’s ability to deeply understand and empathize, key qualities of Grok3.

Around One Lakh people watched the event live, seeing Grok 3 excel in science, coding, and math. Musk praised his xAI team for their hard work and rapid development.

What's New with Grok3?

Grok3 is much more powerful than its earlier version, with more than 10 times more computing power. Musk shared that it finished its pre-training in January, and it improves quickly, sometimes even in just 24 hours.

One of the coolest features of Grok3 is the DeepSearch tool. This smart search engine does not just answer questions but also explains how it understands and forms its answers. It is similar to a tool called DeepResearch by Perplexity AI.

Grok 3 is available now for Premium+ subscribers on X , and xAI is also offering a new SuperGrok plan for users on the Grok app and website.

xAI vs OpenAI

Musk has been very critical of OpenAI, the company he co-founded but later left. He even filed lawsuits against OpenAI, claiming it had strayed from its original goals. He even made an offer to buy OpenAI’s nonprofit side for USD97.4 billion, but they turned him down. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said it was just an attempt to slow them down.

xAI is also in talks to raise USD10 billion, which could bring its value to USD75 billion. Meanwhile, OpenAI is seeking USD40 billion in funding, pushing its value to USD300 billion.

Challenges in Building Grok3 - Creating a powerful AI like Grok 3 requires serious infrastructure. The xAI team had to build their own data center in just four months to meet their launch goals. They got 100,000 GPUs working in 122 days and doubled that number in just 92 days, a huge achievement.

Other companies are also investing heavily in AI infrastructure. Dell Technologies is finalizing a USD5 billion deal to provide xAI with top-tier AI servers. Major companies like SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi-backed MGX are planning to invest USD500 billion in AI data centers.

The power behind Grok3 comes from the Colossus supercomputer, which uses 1,00,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This lets it process huge amounts of data quickly and precisely, setting a new standard for Artificial Intelligence.

As Grok3 rolls out to Premium Plus subscribers on X, users can expect a new era of AI interaction, with powerful features that will change how we connect with artificial intelligence.
