Renowned environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt will receive Indira Gandhi National Integration Award

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Integration Award, named after former Prime Minister of the country Indira Gandhi, will be given to the country's famous environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt this time. The interim president of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi, will present the award on October 31 on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Under this, Rs 10 lakh cash and citation will be provided. Motilal Vora, member secretary of the award advisory committee, said that in a meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi on Thursday, it was decided that Bhatt would be awarded the 31st Indira Gandhi Award for 2017 and 2018 for the work of national unity in the country.

This committee includes former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several senior Congress leaders. Earlier this honor has been given to many celebrities including former PM Rajiv Gandhi (posthumously), former President APJ Abdul Kalam and noted scientist Satish Dhawan. Bhatt, an 85-year-old Gandhian environmentalist who has been associated with the 'Chipko movement', has been honored with many hefty awards earlier which includes prestigious honors like Padma Bhushan, Raman Magsaysay and Gandhi Peace Prize.
