In February 2020, about 11.56 lakh new members joined the ESIC-run social security scheme, according to payroll data from the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) amidst the havoc of Corona. It was joined by 12.19 lakh members in January.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) on Friday released it as part of a report on the matter. According to the report, gross enrollment of new customers with ESIC was 1.49 crore during 2018-19. According to the information received, approximately 3.75 crore new customers joined the ESIC scheme during the period from September 2017 to February 2020.

The NSO report is based on the payroll data of new customers of various social security schemes operated by ESIC, retirement fund body EPFO and pension fund regulator PFRDA. It is releasing data of these bodies from April 2018, covering the period starting from September 2017. Also, the report stated that during the period from September 2017 to March 2018, gross new enrollments with ESIC were 83.35 lakhs. Net 10.34 lakh new enrollments were registered with the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) in February 2020 as compared to 10.71 lakh in the previous month.
