BRUSSELS The European Union (EU) has announced that talks on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), have been temporarily stopped.
According to reports, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement that the 8th round of negotiations in Vienna will "take a pause," giving participants time to return to their capitals for consultations with their governments. "The talks will resume next week," the statement said.
"Participants will continue to discuss the possibility of the US rejoining the JCPOA, as well as how to ensure full and effective implementation of the accord by all parties." Participants would return to their capitals "for talks and instructions" before returning next week, according to Enrique Mora, EEAS Deputy Secretary-General. "Now is the time for political decisions," Mora remarked.
Iran and the JCPOA's five other signatories, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have held rounds of discussions in Vienna in an attempt to resurrect the agreement, which Washington abandoned in 2018 under former President Donald Trump.
